It must be a bitter blow for the good denizens of Slaughter and May who have awoken today to find they are no longer working at a Magic Circle firm. The enigmatic firm appears to have been downgraded by the Financial Times. In a piece about Allen & Overy's financial results, the FT's correspondent concludes:

Slaughter & May is to the magic circle what a great local deli is to Tesco or Wal-Mart. You might think they are admirable in many ways but they just don't really matter that much. Especially as London gets less important to magic circle profits.

Exactly. FT has correctly defined them as having firms with a large international footprint. S&M is just an upmarket version of Travers Smith.

Not necessarily a bad thing. S&M, Travers and the like should be in their own category of firms which get on with doing a good job and turning a decent profit (rather than comparing c**k sizes)!

^^^ This would be a pithy comment, if it wasn't for the fact that S&M clearly also compare c*ck sizes by labelling themselves MC, and Travers spends a good deal of time talking about how they've been around as long as Linkies.

Blithely ignoring the effective retraction by the FT the next day, where they explained they just weren't including SandM for these purposes due to the different geographical footprint... but noting they were the most profitable firm in London...
